It was one of Vauban's last commissions - the improvements to the Fort Carré, the port and upgrading the ramparts which had been in place since the Middle Ages - Antibes.
Today the port is one of the largest yacht harbours in Europe. Antibes is a popular, pretty town where the tiny streets of the old town do not mix easily with motorcars.
The heavy ramparts facing the port give a forbidding and somewhat blank view. There is a fish market, car-parks - a slightly lost area.
A competition which I covered in January 2010 was held to consider how to redevelop the 16,500 square metre area known as the esplanade du
Pré-aux-Pêcheurs. Budget is 5.5 million euros. Renovation of the casemates, new retail and cultural facilities. 3 to 4 firms were to be selected, reach receiving 20,000 euros.
The winner is the rising star Rudy Ricciotti.
Ricciotti meets Vauban ? This is going to be worth watching.
